Whilst Matt Reeves works on bringing the next Dark Knight to the big screen, Ben Affleck’s tenure as Batman is officially over.
For the last two years, fans have heard the online reports of his departure, and with the news Reeves new Dark Knight film would hit screens summer 2021 — Affleck took to Twitter to confirm he was retiring from the role.
“Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life.”

Affleck who was originally set to direct The Batman appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week to promote his new film Triple Frontier. The actor spoke with Kimmel about his attempt to make a Batman film.
“I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter, but just couldn’t come up with a version. I couldn’t crack it and so I thought it’s time for someone else to take a shot at it. They got some really good people so I’m excited.”
Kimmel being Kimmel, put on a retirement ceremony for Affleck to officially hang up the cape and cowl, with the help of Guillermo in a Robin costume.
Check it out below:
Batman V Superman director Zack Snyder who introduced Affleck to the world as Batman took to Vero to bid him a farewell, calling the actor the “Best Batman Ever.”
“The was a time above… a time before… there were perfect things… diamond absolutes. But things fall… things on earth. And what falls… is fallen. In the dream, it took me to the light. A beautiful lie…Best Batman ever. Thank you my friend for blessing me with that fucking glorious chin and an amazing heart.”
I wholeheartedly agree with Snyder on Ben being the best Batman ever. Whilst Christian Bale’s was top-notch, Affleck’s Dark Knight epitomised all the qualities of the perfect Batman.
Whilst I’m gutted Affleck won’t return, I’m happy he’s at peace, looking fit and healthy. We wish him all the best.
