We’re officially getting a Tomb Raider sequel and I’m here for it.
Deadline reports filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Free Fire) has signed on to direct the sequel for MGM, which is set to hit screens March 19, 2021. Screenwriter Amy Jump will pen the script, with Alicia Vikander returning to reprise her role as Lara Croft.
First off, I’m surprised we’re getting a sequel, I know it was announced that Jump would pen the script back in April, but I wasn’t 100% sure the film would happen after the first never made the kind of that begins a franchise. Tomb Raider grossed $58 million in the U.S. against a reported budget of almost $100 million, and earned only $274 million worldwide.
It must have been good for someone at MGM to back it a second time round. I’m glad they’re sticking with the franchise, I know the first wasn’t the greatest, but it has plenty of potential and an Oscar winner as it’s star.
