Ray Winstone has joined the cast of Marvel’s upcoming Black Widow movie, Variety has revealed.
The 62-year-old Essex born actor best known for his roles in The Departed, Sexy Beast and Beowolf joins Scarlett Johansson who reprises her role as the titular character Natasha Romanoff aka Black Window. David Harbour (Stranger Things), Florence Pugh (Fighting With Family) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) will also star.
Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) will direct the film, from a script by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle). Plot details are being kept close to the studio’s chest, with Winstone’s role remaining a mystery for now.
Marvel President Kevin Feige has hinted the film will be a prequel in a recent interview with i09 whilst promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home:
“There’s always a method and doing things in an unexpected way is something we find fun. There are ways to do prequels that are less informative or answer questions you didn’t necessarily have, and then there are ways to do prequels where you learn all sorts of things you never knew before.”
Feige hint’s that they make take the Better Call Saul approach:
“I look at Better Call Saul as a wonderful example of a prequel that almost completely stands on its own apart from Breaking Bad because it informs you about so many things you didn’t know about before. So time will tell which way we’ve gone with a supposed Black Widow movie.”
