Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Now, before I start this, you should know that Zack Snyder’s Justice League can only get more interesting. Anyone planning to “spoil” news about the upcoming HBOMax Exclusive Mini-Series is delusional. And I say that as someone that’s known about how things end for Part 1. I can only smile at the thought that Zack is getting to finish his original vision and in the proper way, he originally wanted to. We know that Zack shot a lot of ‘bullets’ when it came to principle photography. So now that he’s been given the opportunity to add to his already 5-hour assembly cut, things are getting interesting.
Zack has said that his Knightmare World would have played an integral part in his JL Plan. And that was one of the many things reduced by Geoff Johns and studio execs. But with new scenes being added, it looks like we’re getting that world again. Only this time, it’s to bring things we weren’t fully aware of, back to realization. This is a forewarning: If you want to be completely unaware of these details, be cautious. Spoilers may be present below.
We can start with the obvious and known people involved so far, that has been confirmed.
- Ben Affleck – Batman
- Ray Fisher – Cyborg
- Amber Heard – Mera
- Jared Leto – Joker
- Joe Manganiello – Deathstroke
Now for the characters most likely to appear in the additional photography.
- Amy Adams – Lois Lane
- Henry Cavill – Superman
- Harry Lennix – Martian Manhunter
- Lawrence Fishburn – Perry White
- Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
- Viola Davis – Amanda Waller
- TBD – Hal Jordan
- TBD – Jon Stewart
For those not seeing the full picture yet, the five main cast members already known, appear in the Knightmare Timeline. The reason for that is in this alternate timeline, Batman is forced to work with Deathstroke and Joker to defeat Evil Superman and Darkseid. How those three become linked is still a mystery. But it would also make sense for Mera to be involved as well. In this world, Aquaman and Wonder Woman are dead. So to have an Atlantean helping in the Resistance would make sense. And to have a mercenary and wild card on your side would also be important. Rounding out the ragtag team is Cyborg, in his half-body state.
As for anything else being filmed, there were rumors that we would see Deathstroke break Lex out of Arkham. From what I’ve been told, that never happened. Now that’s not to say that Zack couldn’t be adding that scene back in somehow (if that was originally the plan). So really, having them back in Arkham would require more than just the main actors on set which might be difficult due to COVID-19 safety regulations. So the only footage that makes sense to be added is Knightmare because that world played heavily in Zack’s 5-Part Arc.
The New Additions
Now, for the new characters that should be appearing as well. We know from Zack, that he planned on having Harry Lennix, Amy Adams, and Henry Cavill for additional photography. Lennix would appear as Martian Manhunter as a nice easter egg for fans. But the purpose for Lois and Clark filming additional scenes is up in the air. I firmly believe Zack plans on shooting his “scary idea” which would’ve been Lois dying at the hands of Darkseid. If that happens, it would further help explain how we get to the Knightmare Timeline in the first place. But with Henry shooting The Witcher currently, it’ll be interesting to see how that works out.
The other characters most likely to appear are Lawrence Fishburn, Margot Robbie, and Viola Davis. Fishburn plays Perry White and was absent from the 2017 film because of schedule conflicts. But it appears that Zack and writer, Chris Terrio, would be able to figure out a way to fit him somewhere in the extra 30 minutes of additional footage being added to the 214 cut (which was also compromised and will be altered). As for Robbie and Davis, they would be reprising their Suicide Squad roles as Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller in the Knightmare Timeline as well. They would be helping the Resistance with Batman and Cyborg and could also possibly be involved with Arkham scenes.
The big unknown in all of this is will Green Lantern show up? From what I’ve been told by several sources is that Ryan Reynolds is the likely candidate to portray Hal Jordan. This version would be completely different and not a continuation of the 2011 film. Reynolds would be playing an older version of Hal that has been away in Space for most of his Lantern Career. And this wouldn’t just be what Reynolds wants, Zack has also expressed his desire in wanting Reynolds to portray Jordan I’ve heard.
The main reason for Jordan appearing would be to usher in a younger Jon Stewart that would eventually join the main Justice League. He would be the Lantern for the team in the following seasons of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. But even if Reynolds doesn’t portray Jordan, both him and Stewart would be cast with new actors playing the roles. And from what I’ve been told, Zack has big plans for Jon Stewart’s Green Lantern. Just keep in mind that these teases would be minor and most likely won’t involve much action except to warn Bruce of the impending doom of Darkseid after Steppenwolf’s defeat.
With additional photography shooting as we speak, many have wondered how much Zack can add in the two weeks allotted. Some of these characters might not show up because of scheduling conflicts or some might be added as a surprise that we have no idea about. And from what I’ve been told, the shoots have been smaller and aren’t meant for big set pieces. So even though we’re seeing a lot of familiar faces, don’t expect a completely new film. This photography is meant to flesh out the four, hour-long, episodes to work for that style of release. And it’ll most likely have a lot more character-building and world-building to help with the overall story being told.
Zack is getting to tell his story, his vision, and his overall plan for his characters the way he meant to in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The poetic justice, pun intended, is something I never thought I’d be writing about this soon. But now that it’s here, I can’t help but think back to my article from May of last year, explaining the focus of AT&T. They heard us and wanted to Right Warner Bros.’ Wrong. And now that they’re investing an additional $70 Million to realize this, I’m excited for what’s to come next in the Saga of Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
