Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers star Karen Gillan has her sights on Warner Bros. DC Films Universe.
Whilst in Brazil promoting Jumanji: The Next Level, the actress was asked which other comic book characters she would like to play and Gillan told Omelete “Batgirl would be pretty cool! Yeah, she’s a redhead.”
Then she was asked if she could direct any comic book movie what would it be and she responded:
“Batgirl would be cool for that as well! My favourite films in that world are dark, and my favourite one is Dark Knight. I just love the way that was directed so much so I would love to work in that kind of world as the director.”
Long-time Batgirl comic book writer Gail Simone heard what Gillan said and almost immediately endorsed her for the role.
“As one of Batgirl’s longest-running writers, I would totally endorse @karengillan as Batgirl. She’d kill as Barbara. Put Cass in there, too!”

Batgirl has been in development at Warner Bros. for a while now, originally Joss Whedon was on board to direct, but he left in 2018 after failing to crack the story he wanted for the film. Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson is currently writing a treatment for the character and it’s been said Warner Bros are wanting a female director to helm the film. I’m biased when it comes to Scottish folk doing well, so I’m totally onboard with Gillan playing Batgirl.
Please remember, this is just Gillan answering interview questions. These are the sort of questions fans love answered. She is not involved in any Batgirl project, just voicing her interest.
