In an exciting announcement singer Halle Bailey, one half of R&B duo Chloe X Halle has been cast as Ariel in director Rob Marshall’s remake. Bailey is a series regular on Freeform’s Grown-ish.

Per Variety, Marshall had spent months meeting with talent, with insiders saying Bailey had been a clear front runner from the beginning. Marshall released a statement on Halle’s casting:

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”

Actress Melissa McCarthy has also joined the cast. The Bridesmaids star has been cast as the sea witch Ursula. Jacob Tremblay (Wonder) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) will also star.

The Little Mermaid was a huge hit for Disney, the story followed a mermaid Princess Ariel who fell in love with a Prince who was from the surface. The live-action film was written by David Magee, with Jane Goldman penning an earlier draft. It will incorporate the songs from the animated film as well as new material from original composer Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), who is also producing.
