Since the moment Batgirl was teased for Warner Brothers upcoming DC Extended Universe movie slate, fans have been clamoring for more news about the film.
Last year, Joss Whedon, director of Marvel Studios’s Avengers and creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, came aboard the project. However, he stepped away in February of this year by his own accord after failing to produce a story that satisfied both himself and the studio. This effectively stalled production of the movie, leaving its fate up in the air.
Now, two months later, it is being reported by THR that Christina Hodson has been tapped to pen a script about the Gotham heroine.
Hodson wrote last year’s Unforgettable for Warner Brothers as well as Paramount’s upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
Hodson had also been developing a screenplay for a Birds of Prey film for Warner Brothers, a movie based on DC’s all-female crime-fighting team including Batgirl, Black Canary, and Huntress.
The movie will feature Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, under the cowl. The character was first played by Yvonne Craig in the original Batman TV series during its third season. She appeared last on the silver screen played by Alicia Silverstone in 1997’s Batman and Robin.
Following the success of 2017’s Wonder Woman, fans hope to see another iconic female heroine properly adapted for a modern audience. Many are already pleased to see a female screenwriter take on the task.
