The Ninth Film

Vanity Fair has just released new images of Quentin Tarantino’s Ninth Film, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood. By all accounts, this looks to be Tarantino getting back to the roots of his early days. With writing credits to True Romance From Dusk Till Dawn, and his Best Director/Writer Oscar-winning film Pulp Fiction, we’re in for a cinematic experience. I haven’t brought up his latest outings mainly because of the spaghetti-western influence, but that’s a plus. He has the opportunity to utilize what he’s learned since his debut film, Reservoir Dogs, and incorporate his skills with the star-studded cast he’s assembled.

Being able to witness Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, plus more all together in a film, is a cinephile’s dream. Period pieces all have unique ways of interpreting the creative ways to bring out fashion and nostalgia. For Tarantino, his last 3 films have all been influenced by his love for Sergio Leone. Add they’ve all been situated around real-world events in history and you can see how his next film is the epitome of his filmography.

So What’s The Story?

The irrevocable era of the Golden Age of Hollywood was a story in and of itself. In August 1969, Los Angeles was in the limelight of chaos. Charles Manson and his “family” went on a killing spree that included a pregnant Sharon Tate. Tate also happened to be married to A-List Director Roman Polanski. If all that sounds like the plot, that’s because it’s what happened. That, along with the cult following of the ‘Manson Family’, and it becomes a tale for the ages. And with Tarantino at the helm, it sets the stage, literally, for his magnum opus.

When you consider the cultural impact of the decade and lifestyle influences of the era, the event becomes much more. The City of Los Angeles was in abundance of larger than life personalities and the ‘Film Star’ was taking form. Hollywood was ripe with celebrities and tales of terror alike. But, when Helter Skelter became fully realized, the town was no longer creating the story; it became one. With Tarantino’s stylized visuals to his ambitious award-winning dialogue, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood could be his best film yet.

The Stars

I can’t remember a time where I’ve seen such a talented cast of actors in a single film. Leonardo Dicaprio plays a washed-up Television Western actor named Rick Dalton. Brad Pitt plays his long-time friend and stunt double, Cliff booth. Margot Robbie is the infamous Sharon Tate and Al Pacino is Marvin Schwarzs, a Super Agent to the stars.
